AJH finished High school applied and was accepted for shipwright apprenticeship in January 1967.

1967 to 1969 Evans Deakin Shipyard Brisbane Queensland Australia.
- Shipwright Apprenticeship / Indentured five (5) years School 1 day a week for three (3) years.
- Shipwright Apprentices work in all trades during the apprenticeship indentureship.

Repair & Refit Projects
In the period from 1960 to 1975 Ballina Slipway saw the launch of forty-seven vessels ranging from cane barges to sea going including the Comalco Investigator, Australia's most powerful tug at the time. Notable restorations carried out at Ballina include such famous names such as M.V Krait, the Sydney ferry South Steyne, as well as the sailing vessels Bounty and Soren Larsen. This yard specialized in ship construction and repair, and at its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, employed more than 120 people. Wood and steel boats of all kinds were constructed, fishing vessels, large ocean-going tug for the mining industry, and island trading vessels for island Pacific nations.
